Remember when I blogged? That was fun, right? Sorry for dropping off without warning. What do you say we give it another go?

I don’t know about you, but I’m psyched about some of the sweet changes and adventures that are going down in 2012. One of them includes a legit website for Katherine Alison Photography. It’s been a long time coming, and it’s almost here.

Some days (ok, let’s just be real - most days) I can be so very distracted I don’t even realize it. Cares, anxieties, desires surround me before I recognize I’m caught up in them.

I am thankful Jesus steadily whispers His presence in my soul. I’m thankful He’s tuning my ears more and more to His voice. I’m thankful for the way He satisfies me. I’m thankful He makes me rest and restores my soul.

Typically, I insist no mention of Christmas can be made until after Thanksgiving. Ask my family. But this year? This year as soon as November first hit the calendar Christmas music was heard coming from my room, hot chocolates were made, and I’ve been secretly plotting how I can get my hands on some of the Christmas lights stored up in the attic. And guys? This weekend it snowed in the mountains! SNOWED! Go make me a snow angel or build a snowman.

So for Thanksgiving, I’ll be thankful for Christmas.

Oh, How He Loves Us

{Remember a couple of weeks ago? My heart was full, but there were no words yet. They are finally starting to come.}

We love because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19

That verse has been playing back in my head every day for the last week. It’s as if Jesus sat me down and said, “ Look, I KNOW you know in your head I love you. I KNOW you’re striving to love me. But STOP! Wait on Me. Be still. Let ME love you. My love goes beyond the day I took on your sin. It goes beyond the day I conquered death. It’s living and active today, and you need to let Me love you.”

So He started by talking to me about condemnation. (Because He like to mess with my head like that. I’m telling you, He has a sense of humor.)

There is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh (Rom 8:13)

For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. … Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great high priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. (Heb 10:14, 19-22)

Uh, I have been perfected. For all time?! I have been given every right to drawn near to the Holy of Holies with a true heart. He removed every obstacle in the way of me abiding with Him. Yes!

But there’s more! Not only does He WANT me in His presence completely covered by Him. The Father is glorified by this! Remember John 15?

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart me you can do nothing. … By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. (John 15:5,8)

Apart from me you can do nothing. We love because He first loved us. I am completely in God’s hands, and it is a good place to be.

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man that takes refuge in him! … The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned. Ps 34:8,22

Yeah, this photo really has nothing to do with this post. I just thought it was pretty.

I’ve been listening to Irene by Tobymac all day. “Hey little girl with the pressures of world on your shoulders don’t say that it’s over.” August has been a rough month. I had no idea it was going to be. Honest. It’s been like… like being at the beach and you’re trying to catch a wave. A nice big one comes. You’re excited cuz this is gonna be the best ride of the day. You’re all set to go. BUT you miss it. And not in the innocent “Oh I’ll just duck dive” sort of way. It’s too late for that. You get pummeled. Knocked around so much you can’t tell which way is up. That wave finally has the decency to spit you up on the shore. You gasp for breathe. Try to cough out that burning salt water taste stuck in your throat. Then, if you’re like me, alternate between terrified and TICKED OFF that just happened. August has been like that. Over and over again.

Definitely not end of the world stuff. The cliché “storms of life” stuff sounds too dramatic. Just wave after wave. Being knocked down, and coming up to see another mound of water. Oh great, AGAIN!?

I’ve been learning though. Or maybe re-learning is a better term. God is my refuge. He is my defense. He is my bread and water. And you just don’t go out by yourself, and tell the Creator, “It’s fine. I’ve got this.” You don’t do that. Ever.

(2) Philosophy’s Unconditional Love fragrance. They describe it as a “soulful, sweetly warm scent”. I don’t know exactly what that means, but it smells delightful.

(3) KELLEY is coming today! I haven’t seen her in ages. And she’s going to help me photograph a wedding this weekend. It’s all very happy.

God is Good

I was that girl who played with horses. Dolls were alright for the occasional accessorizing session. But horses? That’s where the fun was at, peoples. I remember spending hours on my bedroom floor playing with my herd of horses. There is still a box in the attic that holds the collection. (That collection represents many happy memories and many weeks of saving my allowance. I can't just yard sale it.) As I got older, it turned into reading every Black Stallion book I could get my hands on. Not a hard mission to accomplish when you find out your piano teacher has almost every single one of them in her library AND is willing to let you borrow them. That was almost as awesome as finding a herd of horses in a pasture right below the Eastern Sierras… at sunset. God is good.

Love these girls so much! I stole them off to Oak Glen to take their photos and eat apple pie. Sadly all the restaurants were closed and there was no apple pie. I think the photos sorta made up for that though. It was the perfect combination of gorgeous sisters and gorgeous evening light.

Tessa, the oldest, is gentle and quiet. Her presence is calming.

Leah is the life of the party. She always has a good story to share. And it will usually leave you laughing.

Confession: Sometimes I write myself emails to remember things. Currently my drafts folder has 10 some odd emails. It’s mostly quotes, a few wanna-be journal entries/ rants, and a phone number whose owner’s name I apparently didn’t think was necessary to remember. I’m considering calling it today… just for the adventure of it. This blog post was brought to you courtesy of the drafts folder. A late night brain storming session led to several ideas. I woke up this morning and was completely blank when it came to those ideas. Thank goodness for emails.

Yosemite Falls and Switchbacks

7.2 miles round trip.
2700 feet of elevation gained and lost.
Nature's very own slip n' slide of hard packed and melting snow for the last quarter mile.
Approximately five thousand switchbacks. I'd like to think that's a conservative estimate. I'm also pretty certain there were more switchbacks coming down than there were going up. ;)

But *cue the Chariots of Fire theme song* we made it to the top!

Half Dome and Star Trails

I’m afraid of bears. Not a normal healthy respect, like an irrational “all the bears in Yosemite Valley are out to maul me to death” kind of fear. I’m even convinced a good chunk of them come down from the high country once word gets out I’m there. Yes, this fear is specific to Yosemite. It's irrational, remember? I blame it on all the ranger talks we went to when I was little. They made a huge deal about the bears. “Use the bear lockers! Bears roam the campgrounds! They destroy cars! Don’t run if you see one!”

Terrifying.

Which is why I feel like this photo, a 40 minute exposure in a very dark meadow, is a big deal.

Like how much I love exploring.
Like the fact people actually live in Whitewater. Let alone, people who build log cabins that fly both the American and Canadian flag.
Like how gorgeous that canyon is in the spring time.
Like pumas exist. I didn’t actually see one, but I saw a warning sign about them. I thought that was pretty exciting.

And mostly, I had forgotten that God loves me… a lot. And that He understands me. Go read Psalm 103. Right now. Seriously. Then read this.

I can count on one hand the number of girl friends I had growing up. There simply were not very many girls around. Play time mostly consisted of tag and cars and forts. I loved it. But I loved playing with dolls too. So when Jessica came to visit it was kind of a big deal.

We don’t play dolls anymore. She’s in school working toward becoming a speech pathologist. This summer she’s going to St. Petersburg for a month. I’m excited for her. She’s wanted to go to Russia ever since I can remember. The cool part? She’s gets to love on some teens with disabilities while she’s there. Did I mention I’m excited for her?

She’s back home for spring break right now. So we spent Sunday afternoon catching up on life at Panera Bread. Then she was kind enough to let me spring a quick photo shoot on her. ;)

Hi world! Do you remember me?

I’ve been reading a ton lately. The visioneering mentorship keeps me busy with The Fast Track Photographers and Outliers. I’m taking my Wilderness First Responder recert in less than a month(!!!!!), so I spend a fair amount of time trying to memorize the signs and symptoms of shock and pulmonary edema and other lovely things. Then if I have spare time I read O Jerusalem! I love that book. It’s about the birth of Israel as a nation, and it’s written in a novel style.

The other night that mix of reading lead to a crazy dream. I dreamed I was a photojournalist on a convoy to Israel, and we were under attack. At one point, I had to do CPR on a soldier with a laryngectomy. Who dreams that stuff up? People who read about CPR right before going to bed, that’s who.

So have you been reading any good books lately?

Hello! I’ve been absent, and I’ve missed you. I started a mentorship program last week. It’s going to stretch me both personally and help me put feet to the idea of running photography business. Cool, huh?

I spent the better part of the day in a coffee shop reading, writing, thinking, smelling the delicious coffee fumes. My friend Marissa stopped by and we talked about photography, good books, and God. It’s ok. You can be jealous of my Monday.

Have you heard of Katie Herzig? I heard about her a couple of years ago, but rediscovered how much I love her music over the weekend. I think this song is my current favorite, but I like most all of them. So you should check it out for yourself.

P.S. I got flowers for my birthday. Aren't they pretty?

Meet my friend Heidi. I love this girl! We used to go to the same church together. I was the shy quiet one who was quite content to be a wall flower, but she pulled me out of my shell. She's outgoing, loves to laugh, plays a killer game of volleyball, and has incredible blue eyes. Did I mention she has a great sense of style? Yeah, she's got that too. Heidi plans on going to school to learn American Sign Language, so she can become a teacher at a deaf school.

I miss this place. I miss the people. Their faces. I promise you haven’t seen smiles like theirs. They are contagious. At first I walked timidly to the door of their homes. “May I take your photo, please?” I shyly asked.

“Yes, of course! Where are you from? Come in! How long are you staying? Do you like Fiji?”

Yes, I do.

I love the way they insist on getting to know a person. I adore their generous spirit. They would literally give you the shirt off their back… or climb a tree to find you the best mangoes ever. That’s no exaggeration either. I love the way they laugh even though I couldn’t tell if it was with me or at the way I stumbled through their culture. (I’m pretty sure it was the second ; ) And I had a huge fat crush on the soft light that fell through this neighborhood and all the colors and textures that made up the homes.

This is Vatawaqa, a squatters village, in Suva Fiji. The government does not want them here. Most of the people who call this home do not have jobs. They have nowhere else to go. But they are beautiful, and God loves them beyond measure.

All four of us manage to be in the same photo with almost cordinatining outfits, smiling faces, and unblinking eyes. You know, the kind of photo were the photographer (yours truly) sets the camera on a tripod, press the shutter button, and dashes over to the rest of the family. This year we did the family picture before church. Dad is the only morning person in the family, and we did photos before church. We even made there early, folks.

See? The impossible happens.

Baby Shower

A couple of weeks ago I had the chance to photograph my friend Diane's baby shower. Now I know you all are wondering, what does one wear to a baby shower as the photographer? Answer: The blue shirt with brown and orange owls. Then you show up and discover the colors are blue, orange, and brown. With owls. Score!

What baby shower would be complete without some games? I'm generally a epic fail at them. However, these ladies rocked it. Holding the baby, talking on the phone, AND pinning clothes on the line.

Right now I have the house all to myself, peoples. The Christmas tree, a nativity scene, flickering candles, and a cheery poinsettia are my company on this gray morning. Did I mention the house is completely quiet? Happy day.

Remember the catherdral I showed you earlier? Brace yourself for more loveliness. It was our second to last night in New Zealand. Bundled under several layers of clothing we ventured from the hostel to go see the Christchurch Catherdral. Street musicians filled the air with music. In the square in front of the church, kids did stunts on their bikes attempting to impress each other. Locals strolled casually by, some with curious glances at us and all our cameras. This is what I saw.

The next day was a free day. The free day I had grand plans of sleeping in until nine. The free day a fire alarm went off at six in the morning. The place didn't burn down, but that's still a nasty way to start the morning. Anyway, later some of us went exploring inside the church.

I’m not a morning person. Waking up at four in the morning is not my idea of a good time. My corner of the world is still dark at that time. The stars and the newspaper delivery boy are the only ones up so far as I know. No matter, the fellow drives off after handing me the paper, and the stars melt into a pale purple sky as we drive down the road. A quick pit stop, before we enter the park. I stare at the horizon while I wait for Dad. It’s still outside. I love that, but still debate whether it was worth loosing 3 hrs of sleep. We continue on our way. Winding through the Queen Valley up to Keys View, passing groves of joshua trees as we go. Dad parks the car. I pop out to grab camera gear from the back seat only to be greeted by a gust wind. Nope, that’s not a gust. The wind really is that strong. 45 miles per hour, Dad estimates. I lean into it just to keep standing, and am grateful I picked the wind breaker not the fleece to bring with this morning. I sit on the ledge that separates the tame cement walk way from the rugged hills that drop down to the Coachella Valley. You can see all the way from the U.S. – Mexico border to the Pass where I live. City lights dot the desert floor. The breadth of it all starts to put things into perspective.

The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. … For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so high is His steadfast love toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does He remove our transgressions from us. … For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. God created everything. He understands. He is not taken back or surprised by my troubles. I am small compared to Him. He knows this and is merciful, abounding in steadfast love.

Remember how I mentioned harp camp in my last post? You do? Well, I was both a student and the photographer that week. Which is crazy combo, especially when you add being down with a sinus infection. I felt like should have had a 'I survived Harp Camp' sticker by the end of the week.

Downtown Portland, Oregon

July has come and gone. I woke up Sunday morning and it was August. Just another day, but still a relief. July was crazy, filled to the brim with ups and downs. A road trip with the family across the West, visiting dear friends in WA, celebrating Independence Day on the 3rd and 4th, a video class in Portland, helping with VBS, harp camp, battling exhaustion and sicknness, relearning how to be content at home - July held all that and then some.

God showed up and reminded me that He came to carrying all my worries and failures and imperfections. I'll never be good enough on my own, so He covers me with His righteousness by the blood of His Son. I have only to rest in Him and wait for Him to provide.

Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Psalm 62:8

So Goodbye July and Hello August.

Springtime Classics

Last night my church held a benefit concert. But this wasn't just any benefit concert. This was the Springtime Classics. A group of accomplished classical musicians donated their time and talent to raise support for the college group's upcoming mission trip to Haiti. The music was gorgeous.

Last month I had the opportunity to go down to a women’s shelter in Ensenada with a group from my church. The plans to put up a power pole/fix the roof were quickly changed when a storm rolled in and poured buckets of rain. (I’ve never seen so much mud in my life.) Instead we ended up playing with the kids and visiting with mothers. I had a blast taking some family portraits for the women. Here are just a few of my favorites.

Great is Your Faithfulness

I love this photo. I love the way the sun is shining, yet the rain is pouring. I even love how the clouds veil the top of Mt. San Jacinto. It reminds me that rain or shine God is still sovereign. Even when I have no idea where I'm heading, let alone how to get there, God is always faithful.

But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. - Lamentations 3:21-23

So I started a blog. Yep, a blog. This week I was able to spend a couple of days visiting some friends in Fresno, and, in between watching the Olympics (go team USA!), they helped me get it all set up.

Now I'm home enjoying the sunset in my very warm shoes. Ok, so they're slippers. These beauties have earned me the nickname Fluffy Foot around the house. They're worth it, promise.
